We carried out testing of 2 of our PRS radios on a clear fine day in August. We wanted to check the line of sight distance of our Rexon Radios and to see how far they actually go.
We carried out our testing in Nelson, using our radios set up on channel 1 with a tone of 67 hertz so we didn’t get interference from anyone else.
Bryce set off from his home and his first stop was rocks road which is the main road from the airport to the city via the sea.
In the meantime I set off heading for Takaka Hill. My first stop was at Ruby Bay on top of the cliff. This was direct line of sight across the bay to the port area where Bryce was located.
I stress at this point that this testing is Line of Sight with no obstacles in the way. The distance was 17.25km line of sight and the clarity was amazing, with very little static noise we could quite clearly hear the cars driving past Bryce in the background.
The next spot we tested was the beach front next to the Motueka Golf Course. In the meantime Bryce had driven round to Atawhai near Walters Bluff, again we tried the radios, again voice communication was very clear and we could hear everything without any problems.
We then decided to drive up the top of the Takaka Hill. As we were driving Bryce drove up to the first level of Walters Bluff a sub-division just to the North East of Nelson City.
As we drove up Takaka Hill to the top we were picking up Bryce intermittently which means it was going to work but certainly Line of Sight Only.
We stopped at the Cave Car Park not far from the top of Takaka Hill the radios worked perfectly, a line of sight distance of 42.85km and we were both still sitting in the cars. We then tried the radios on 1 watt Power. There was no difference to the audio clarity; it was as if Bryce was right next to me when we talked. At this stage it also started to snow!
A couple of weeks earlier we decided to check the distance of non line of sight. E.g.: thru buildings, trees, etc:
Bryce left me in a Brightwater subdivision and drove back to Richmond via Nelson Speedway. The night was raining with low cloud. We had good but intermittent communication all the way back to Nelson speedway a distance of over 8km, although as he was getting closer to the speedway it did start to break up and we had more static until he got out of his car. Then it was crystal clear again.
There was no external car aerial used during this test. just the standard antenna which comes with the Rexon UHF PRS radio.
